What’s Included in a Virginia State Inspection 🧑🔧
Virginia follows a 24-point checklist overseen by the Virginia State Police. Each inspection covers critical systems that affect your vehicle’s safety and performance.
Brakes
Brake pads or shoes must be at least 2/32 of an inch thick. We also check rotors, calipers, and the parking brake function.
Tires
Each tire must have a tread depth of 2/32 of an inch or more, with no dry rot, exposed cords, or abnormal wear.
Suspension and Steering
Shocks, struts, tie rods, and other components are inspected for wear, looseness, or leaks that could affect handling.
Lights
All headlights, brake lights, turn signals, reverse lights, and hazard lights must work properly. Lenses must be clear, unbroken, and properly aimed.
Windshield, Wipers, and Mirrors
Windshields must be free from cracks in the driver’s view. Wipers and washers must function correctly, and mirrors must provide clear visibility and be firmly mounted.
Dashboard Warning Lights
Any illuminated check engine, ABS, or airbag light must be addressed before passing inspection.
Exhaust and Fuel System
We look for rusted, leaking, or missing exhaust components, and ensure the fuel system is sealed and free of vapor leaks.
Safety Equipment
Seat belts must operate properly. Doors, hood, and trunk must latch securely, and your horn, airbags, and license plate light must all be functional.
What Happens If Your Vehicle Fails Inspection 🚧
If your vehicle fails, you’ll receive a rejection sticker and a written report detailing the issue. You’ll have 15 calendar days to make repairs and return for a reinspection, which is often free if you return to the same station.
Only the failed components are rechecked. If you don’t return within the grace period, your rejection sticker becomes invalid, and you may be fined for operating a non-compliant vehicle.
Common Reasons for Failure ⚠️
Vehicles most commonly fail due to worn brake pads, low tire tread, warning lights on the dashboard, non-functioning lights, cracked windshields, and exhaust or fuel system leaks.
Can Rust Cause a Failed Inspection?
Yes, particularly in Virginia. Rust that compromises your vehicle’s frame, suspension mounts, brake lines, or fuel lines will fail. Sharp body rust or holes that pose a safety hazard can also be flagged.
Surface rust alone typically won’t cause issues unless it impacts a safety-critical area.
How to Prepare for an Inspection
Before your appointment, check tire tread with a penny (if Lincoln’s head is fully visible, the tread is too low). Test your headlights, brake lights, and wipers. Top off your washer fluid, and address any dashboard warning lights. If you know of any issues with brakes, emissions, or suspension, it’s best to get them looked at before inspection day.
Are There Exceptions to State Inspection Requirements?
Yes—Virginia allows limited exemptions, depending on your vehicle type and how it’s used.
In Virginia, trailers under 3,000 pounds do not require inspection. Antique vehicles (25 years or older, registered with antique plates) that are not used for daily driving may be exempt. New vehicles usually receive a full-year inspection sticker at the time of purchase, but require yearly inspections after that. No exemptions are available for convenience or financial hardship.
To request an exemption in either state, documentation must be submitted through the DMV or inspection station. These exemptions are not granted automatically.
