You’re driving down the road, hands steady on the wheel, but your car seems to have a mind of its own—pulling to the left or right instead of going straight. It’s more than just an annoyance. A car that constantly drifts off course is a sign that something’s off with your alignment, tires, suspension, or brakes.
Ignoring this problem can lead to uneven tire wear, poor fuel economy, and even safety risks. Let’s go over the main reasons why your car might be pulling to one side and what you can do about it.

Common Reasons Your Car Pulls to One Side
Bad Wheel Alignment
The most common reason a car pulls to one side is misaligned wheels. Over time, hitting potholes, curbs, or even regular wear and tear can knock your wheels out of alignment.
Signs your alignment is off:
- Your steering wheel isn’t straight, even when driving straight.
- The car drifts to one side without you turning the wheel.
- Your tires are wearing unevenly.
A wheel alignment corrects this issue and keeps your car driving straight.
Uneven Tire Pressure
If one tire has lower air pressure than the others, it can cause your car to pull in that direction. This happens because a low tire has more rolling resistance, making the car favor one side.
How to check:
- Look for a soft or underinflated tire.
- Use a tire pressure gauge to compare all four tires.
- Inflate them to the manufacturer’s recommended PSI (found in your owner’s manual or on the driver’s side door frame).
Regularly checking your tire pressure can prevent alignment issues and improve fuel economy.
Worn or Uneven Tires
If your tires are worn down unevenly, your car won’t drive evenly, either. This can be caused by improper alignment, lack of tire rotation, or suspension issues.
Check for:
- Tread that’s thinner on one side than the other.
- One tire is more worn down than the rest.
- Any bulges or tire damage.
If your tires are wearing unevenly, a tire rotation or replacement might be needed.
Sticking Brake Caliper
A stuck brake caliper can cause one wheel to drag, forcing your car to pull to that side. This is usually noticeable while driving and braking, and you might also feel a vibration in the steering wheel.
Other signs of a sticking brake caliper:
- Burning smell near the affected wheel.
- The car pulls harder when braking.
- Excessive heat from one wheel after driving.
A mechanic can check your braking system and replace or repair the caliper if needed.
Suspension Issues
Your car’s suspension system is responsible for keeping your wheels planted evenly on the road. If a component like a control arm, tie rod, or ball joint is worn out or damaged, it can throw your car’s handling off balance.
Symptoms of a suspension problem:
- Uneven ride height (one corner of the car sits lower).
- Excessive bouncing or swaying when driving over bumps.
- Unusual noises from the front or rear of the vehicle.
If suspension issues are causing your car to pull, a mechanic can inspect the shocks, struts, and steering components to fix the problem.
How to Fix a Car That Pulls to One Side
Get a wheel alignment – If your car drifts on its own, this is the first thing to check.
Check and adjust tire pressure – Low pressure in one tire can cause pulling.
Inspect your tires – Worn or damaged tires may need to be replaced.
Have your brakes checked – A dragging brake caliper can cause pulling.
Inspect your suspension – Worn-out parts can throw off handling and alignment.
Get Your Car Checked Before It Gets Worse
If your car is pulling to one side, don’t wait until it wears out your tires or makes driving dangerous. The sooner you get it checked, the easier (and cheaper) the fix.
Old Ox Tire & Auto offers wheel alignments, brake repairs, suspension inspections, and tire services to get your car back on track.
